Back to running sprints. I was able to run with my Fiancée and our two boys. Sawyer and Stills the whoodle squad.
I am feeling strong despite coming off a recent ingrown toenail. I was able to run 6 full effort sprints and felt like I had more in the tank.
We were able to measure the length of the pasture and running space and it ended up being 50 yards. Being ultra-competitive, I wanted to see what my 40yard time was compared to my times from high school football. Without cleats and on uneven ground, I surprised myself with a 4.7 40 yard dash.
The number feels good and tracks nicely with my age. However, the sprints are more focused on achieving results in the ring with boxing.
The sprint tightens and recruits the whole body to move in sync to achieve acceleration and most importantly explosiveness. My legs and back did not feel tired and my recovery times between sprints was based on my heart rate. I was able to witness my heart rate recovery as follows: the initial sprints brought my heart rate to 170bpm and by the time I was finishing the workout my heart and blood vessels had optimized and dilated to enable my heart to reach 160bpm after full effort sprints. All of this data is proof that my body is recovering well from the anaerobic nature of the sprint.
I have also altered my diet prior to sprints to front load with carbohydrates and protein and backload with applesauce immediately after to maintain glycogen in my muscles. All in all staying dedicated to a strong warm up and cool down has improved my longevity and subsequent lack of intense muscle soreness from my first sprint sessions. I will increase the volume of sprints to 8 next time to push my threshold.
